About Dao Place
This story is about a family of three generations with a strong survival spirit and a determination to start their new life in the U.S and in the process found themselves a passion and destination for a culinary tradition. Đào Place is not just another restaurant but a work of love and passion. It is her latest culinary creation with more than 40-year experience behind.
Madame Đào, the Founder and Master Chef of Đào Place was a pioneer immigrating to San Francisco in 1975
At the age of 16 she joined the family-50 seat French restaurant in San Francisco as a server while going to school in the day time. She was exposed to the various jobs in the family restaurant: serving, cooking, bartending… The small family restaurant became an instant success and set direction for the family to expand their restaurant business of fine French Dining in California: La Cabane in San Francisco, Au Chambertin in Santa Monica, La Tour in Palo Alto, and Beausejour in Los Altos.
In 1990, Đào returned to Saigon only to visit her relatives but fell in love with Saigon, the homeland city that she thought she could never come back to. She was fascinated with the Home-Style cooking of Vietnam so much that she began learning and experimenting cooking various Vietnamese dishes. Her passion leads her into a gastronomic journey in Vietnam by opening Vietnam House in Saigon (1990), Lemongrass (1991), Blue Ginger (1995), Phở 2000 (1999), and Đào Place (2017).
Her cuisine has been recognized and selected by many dignitaries and VIP: such as US President George Bush, US President Bill Clinton, Vietnam Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet, Japan Prime Minister Murayama Tomiichi.
Madame Đào's decision to return to Vietnam and open restaurants sets the path for the third generation, Khai Huynh (her son) to come back to Vietnam to carry on the commitment and passion for the culinary tradition.
A Cookbook by Madame Đào is being created and will be published by the end of 2017, consisting of many stories and recipes of various regional home-style cooking of Vietnam.
